FORMATION & SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUAL CATHOLIC PRIESTS
The Shepherd Within offers practical, theologically grounded formation for priests who want greater self-knowledge, emotional freedom, relational maturity, resilience, and effectiveness in ministry.
You do not need to be in crisis to grow.
Some priests seek support during a demanding season. Others want to lead more effectively, navigate conflict with greater confidence, build healthier relationships, recover joy, or understand patterns that keep repeating in life and ministry.
This work is not about reducing priesthood to psychology. It is about strengthening the human foundation on which spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral formation depend.
As Saint John Paul II taught, human formation helps the priest become “a bridge and not an obstacle” for others in their encounter with Jesus Christ. Growth in self-knowledge, affective maturity, relationships, and freedom serves the mission of priesthood.

Individual coaching
One-to-one formation and development:
Confidential coaching provides a focused space to understand what is happening, identify the capacities that need strengthening, and turn insight into practical change. The work is tailored to your situation, goals, vocation, and responsibilities.
A typical engagement may include:
An initial confidential conversation
Clarification of goals and desired outcomes
Optional EQ-i 2.0 assessment and debrief
A practical personal-development plan
Regular coaching sessions
Concrete practices between sessions
Review of progress and next steps
Group formation
Growth deepened through fraternity
Small cohorts of priests or seminarians combine guided reflection, practical human-formation content, honest conversation, and application to priestly life. Group formation can be arranged by a diocese, seminary, religious community, or established group of priests.
Topics may include self-awareness, emotional regulation, assertiveness, empathy, conflict, stress tolerance, decision-making, leadership, relationships, and fraternity.
Methodology
Theology gives the vision. Good tools help make growth concrete.
Our work is grounded in the Catholic understanding that grace builds on nature and that human formation is foundational to priestly formation. We draw from psychology, adult development, leadership practice, and emotional and social intelligence to translate broad formation goals into observable behaviors and practical habits.
When useful, we employ the EQ-i 2.0, a well-established assessment of emotional and social functioning. It measures fifteen related capacities—including self-awareness, assertiveness, empathy, interpersonal relationships, flexibility, stress tolerance, and decision-making. The assessment is not a diagnosis and does not define the person. It is a structured source of insight that can support reflection, goal-setting, and development.
Boundaries and Confidentiality
Clear roles protect good work.
Coaching is developmental, future-oriented, and focused on growth and action. It is not psychotherapy, spiritual direction, sacramental ministry, medical care, or canonical or legal representation. When another form of care is needed, appropriate referral or coordination will be discussed.
The scope of confidentiality and any reporting arrangement are clarified before an engagement begins. When a diocese or community sponsors the work, the priest and sponsor should understand in advance what information—if any—will be shared. No ambiguity should be allowed around that question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this only for priests who are struggling?
No. Many priests pursue coaching because they want to grow as men, spiritual fathers, and leaders. Support can be especially useful during transitions, new leadership responsibilities, conflict, vocational fatigue, or periods of unusual pressure.
Is this therapy?
No. Coaching focuses on development, goals, behavior, and forward movement. It can complement therapy, but it does not replace clinical care.
Do I have to complete an assessment?
No. The EQ-i 2.0 is available when it would add value, but it is a tool—not the product and not a requirement for every engagement.
Can my diocese sponsor the work?
Yes. Individual priests may engage directly, and dioceses or religious communities may spoansor coaching or cohort formation. Confidentiality and communication expectations are established clearly at the beginning.
A more integrated, resilient, and joyful priesthood is possible.
