While many wonderful Catholic organizations support priests spiritually, pastorally, or professionally, The Shepherd Within is uniquely focused on human formation through the tested framework of Emotional Intelligence. We are closing the gap between human formation theory and practice. We are the first and only organization in the world to do this.
We don’t just offer encouragement or information—we provide scientifically grounded, personalized coaching that helps priests build the emotional and relational skills they need to thrive as men and holy ministers.
Here’s what sets us apart:
Faithful to Church teaching on priestly formation and the integration of the human and spiritual life (cf. Pastores Dabo Vobis, Ratio Fundamentalis).
Rooted in the EQ-i 2.0 model, the most validated and widely used emotional intelligence assessment in the world.
Designed specifically to serve Catholic priests, not a general audience, our coaching speaks to the real-life dynamics of parish ministry, pastoral leadership, and priestly identity.
Led by someone who has walked closely with priests, as a seminarian, parish worker, and diocesan Director of Clergy Support, with both theological grounding and psychological expertise.
In short, we offer a bridge between formation theory and formation lived out. This is not a retreat or a workshop that ends when the session does—it’s personal, structured, and transformational support for the person behind the collar.

Our services are designed for individual Catholic priests and seminarians as well as for Church leaders (i.e., Bishops, clergy offices, religious orders, vocation directors, and seminary formators) who are committed to living and ministering optimally. If you're involved in ministry and seeking personal or leadership development or are responsible for the formation of others, we'd love to work with you.

One-on-one coaching is a confidential, supportive space focused entirely on you—your growth, your challenges, and your vocation.
It starts with the EQ-i 2.0 emotional intelligence assessment (a Level B Psychometric) as our foundation and first step, we’ll explore your strengths and struggles with clarity and compassion by reviewing the EQ-i 2.0 report.
Next, we’ll create a customized growth plan that addresses emotional, relational, and leadership areas—helping you gain self-awareness, build resilience, and live your priesthood with greater peace and purpose.
It’s not therapy or spiritual direction—it’s practical, solution-focused, future-focused, and skill-focused to strengthen the human foundation of your holy calling.

Emotional Intelligence is not a substitute for grace or growth in virtue—it’s a tool that can support both. While rooted in skill development, EI often fosters growth in the natural virtues and creates the interior freedom that makes room for the life of grace to flourish. The Church teaches that human formation is the foundation of priestly formation (cf. Pastores Dabo Vobis), and affective maturity is at its heart.
EI bridges the gap between human formation theory and practice through scientifically validated tools. It answers the Church’s call to utilize human sciences, especially psychology and social sciences, for sacred purposes. EI offers a practical, scientifically grounded path to grow in self-awareness, self-mastery, empathy, and relationship-building—all essential for integrated humanity and authentic ministry. At its best, EI doesn’t just support human flourishing; it supports holiness and effective ministry.

We use the EQ-i 2.0® model, the gold standard for Emotional Intelligence assessments. It is:
The first scientifically validated measure of EI (a Level B Psychometric only available through certified administrators)
Supported by more research studies than any other EI tool
Available in more languages, with more books and training resources than any other measure
Developed by Dr. Reuven Bar-On, the first to define and quantify Emotional Quotient in scientific terms
Trusted by top organizations including Google, Microsoft, Nike, and Olympus
This model gives us a clear, data-driven foundation for personalized coaching that gets real results.
